We have received great feedback from Priory Community Special School regarding the work placement of one of their students at our head office. Priory School caters for students between the ages of 11 and 19, who have severe learning difficulties and disabilities, as well as students with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Karl has been attending our Head Office each week, carrying out minor manual work under close supervision to aid the development of our extension.

The placement has been designed to help Karl develop numerous skills, which he can then apply to all aspects of his life. The initial focus was the journey to work: following a bus timetable in order to arrive on time, and using public transport along with other people. Crowded social environments were previously a very daunting experience, and we have learned from Priory School that Karl has gradually become more comfortable with them. IMG_9835x

Developing Karl’s communication skills has been a main focus of the work experience placement. It was therefore important that he was introduced to key members of staff, whom he now consults with regularly. In particular, Karl has been working closely with one of our site managers, Alan, and has developed a strong working relationship. He now interacts easily with Alan, which has helped him to settle into the team.

Understanding Health & Safety has been fundamental to Karl’s time at Niblock. This has been demonstrated in the clothing Karl has worn when helping out with the manual work. Alan has explained the importance of wearing eye protection and a hard hat when working around a site area, and the different uses for various types of protective gloves.

Karl has helped out with a variety of tasks during his work placement, such as repairing garage doors (sanding the wood, filling the holes and painting); carrying materials from the stores to the extension area; cleaning windows; and staining wood for the cladding exterior.

The feedback we have received regarding Karl’s skill development has been extremely rewarding! In just a few months, we can already clearly see how extensively Karl’s confidence has grown, and how much he is enjoying the work placement.
