About us

Who we are

Building contractors in the heart of London

We specialise in refurbishment, maintenance and renovation projects, providing a complete refurbishment and modernisation service for public and private sector clients undertaken via traditional and collaborative forms of contract.

The old adage that a company is only as good as its staff is never more true than at Niblock. Founded in 1959, we take pride in the fact that we have an average tenure of employment amongst our management staff of 17 years.

We believe this is due to the traditional values we hold, and our ideology of working with our clients, as opposed to simply working for them. This ‘collaborative’ ethos is maintained throughout the company from board level through to site level.

Our history

Niblock was founded in 1959 as a Carpentry & Joinery contractor by Mr. Joseph Niblock. By the early 1960’s, Niblock had begun to venture into general building contracting; working primarily for the Greater London Council and local authorities, undertaking an element of new construction of flats and houses close to their workshop in Anerley, South East London.

During the late 1970’s, Niblock decided to intensify its efforts on general building, and as a result, the carpentry division gradually declined. This concentration on general building led to the company being approved by most London local authorities, numerous housing associations and selected private clients. By the early 1980’s, Niblock’s reputation was widely recognised as a contractor that delivered what was promised, and this helped to build the relationships with major consultants within the industry; private enterprises; housing associations; and local authorities.

It was in the early 1980‘s that the present Managing Director, Martin Waters, began his association with the company. Martin joined Niblock as a Quantity Surveyor, but his talents were quickly recognised by the Board of Directors and he was soon promoted to Director. In 1992, the Directors were considering retirement and Martin recognised that Niblock had a good reputation and considerable potential. He therefore made the decision to take the bold step of buying out the retiring Directors. Martin’s aim was to retain the positive and traditional elements that were associated with Niblock, but also inject foresight and a positive attitude.

In 2012 Kevin Hartland joined as a Director. Having worked in the industry for over 25 years , Kevin’s primary focus is to develop a depth of experience in process and service management to ensure effective and efficient project implementation from design to delivery and in turn drive continual improvement in Key Performance Indicators across all Niblock business activities.

Today, Niblock has a turnover in excess of £15 million and a healthy order book for the future, with repeat business being the cornerstone of the Company’s turnover. The Company’s success is attributed to its professional management and the employment of highly competent staff. The key element which sets Niblock apart from its competitors is the extremely high staff retention rate and very loyal workforce.
