PLACEMENT AT THE HEIGHTS

July 19th, 2017

After the success of our last work placement with a student from Priory School in Croydon, we were very pleased to welcome another pupil who is considering a vocational course in construction work. On 3rd July, Shaun joined us at our site ‘The Heights’ in Charlton SE7. Following a Site Health & Safety Induction and assessment of Shaun’s needs, our Site Manager Ray Lammas then escorted him around the site. The Heights comprise of 13no. two storey blocks of flats which are undergoing major external refurbishment with residents in occupation.

This placement provided Shaun the opportunity to see first hand what construction work entails, whilst developing his communication skills and confidence within new environments. Shaun thoroughly enjoyed being part of the team for the day and Niblock were only too pleased to play a part in his development.

Priory School caters for students who have severe learning difficulties and disabilities and we are committed to building a close relationship with them and forging links with our local community.

HOARDING AWARENESS WEEK

May 12th, 2017

Niblock are proudly supporting National Hoarding Awareness Week (15 – 19 May 2017).

http://hoardingawarenessweek.org.uk

Our aim is to raise awareness and encourage contractors to show empathy to residents with hoarding behaviour. Hoarding is the persistent difficulty in discarding personal possessions, including those with apparently limited value, due to strong urges to save the items, distress and indecision. These accumulated possessions fill up and clutter active living areas to the extent that their intended use is no longer possible. Clutter can even spill over to communal areas and affect neighbours. It is a very misunderstood and complex issue that affects the individual, their family and the surrounding community. Whilst some hoarders have good insight into the problems caused by their behaviour, other sufferers can be reluctant to seek help for their problems. Through increasing public awareness and improving identification, we can help sufferers receive help.

Hoarding is a secretive issue that can affect anyone – from all socio-economic, age and ethnic groups. It is estimated that hoarding affects 2-5% of the population.

Without intervention, the risks associated with hoarding can be harmful to the person, their relationships, families and neighbours. It can lead to an increased risk of:

  • House fires
  • Infestations
  • Tripping/falls
  • Social isolation
  • Access challenges for emergency services
  • Child protection issues
  • Tenancy agreement breaches resulting in evictions
  • Anxiety, depression and stress
