Fine design and installation of new finishes to the main roofs and sky garden areas at BedZED, the UK’s first large-scale, mixed-use sustainable community designed to create zero carbon emissions through high levels of insulation, airtightness and passive solar heating design. The pioneering environmentally-friendly housing development, completed in 2002, declared a new dawn in sustainable housing. The space comprises 100no. homes, offices, college and community facilities.
Works were carried out by Niblock to further reduce carbon emissions whilst maximising the old materials to recycled content, and included:

Main roof replacement, including Sedam’s horizontal roof covering and Live Living Wall vertical application with irrigation system

Intense daily liaison with Merrywood Education: Sandmartin Campus for children who have experienced trauma and require SEMH provision

Worked collaboratively with BedZED Residents Assocation to plan enhancements to the outdoor communal areas

Installed new benches to provide comfortable seating in shared green spaces

Removed disused wood and rubble, eliminating an eyesore and addressed a potential safety risk for children playing in the area

Refurbished the pergola to create a more welcoming environment

Carried out general landscaping improvements to enhance the appearance and usability of the space
